City offers free spay/neuter services for pets

The city of Wichita issued a news release last week with some alarming numbers. Of 10,476 animals housed by the city’s animal services division in 2009, 1,528 were returned to their owners, 2,641 were transferred to animal adoption groups and 6,307 — more than 60 percent — were euthanized.

Do you know someone who has a dog or cat but can't afford to get them spayed or neutered? The city of Wichita, working with Spay-Neuter Kansas and the Kansas Humane Society, is using federal grant money to help low-income residents get their pets altered, so they will stop reproducing and help with the problem of pet overpopulation. Spay-Neuter Kansas, the low-cost clinic at 319 S. Hydraulic, is in desperate need of small crates for cats. Many people who bring cats in to the clinic to be altered cannot afford a crate, and at least two cats have escaped before or after surgery because they weren't secured in a crate.
