Checked out the new dog park
12 posts | Page 1 of 2
This last weekend I went to the dog park at Chapin Park. Both Saturday and Sunday there were about 15 dogs that were in the big dog area. My dog had a good time and I'm so happy to finally have a place where dogs can play together.
I also took my dogs to the park Sat afternoon, there were only about 6-10 dogs on each side, but my dogs loved it. It was so much fun to watch them run to their little hearts content.

Love the new dog park. Big Dogs Huge Paws Rescue has an open meet up group every weekend. Switching back and forth between Saturday and Sunday. You can find the times under events at www.bigdogshugepaws.com. Please come out and join us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have drive by the intersection where I thought it was supposed to be, and I can't tell where you are supposed to park. What street do you turn off of? Unless they have put signs up since I have been there I think it is hard to find.

If you turn in using the MacArthur street entrance and drivie back about 1/2 mile you will find plenty of parking and the fenced in dog area. The city could use a few more signs that is for sure.

well I see someone beat me to the big dogs hosting meetups there. We have gone every saturday/sunday for some time now even in the blistering cold. Do wear boots! The little dog side does have some sod there, but the big dog area is mostly mud with some hay on top here and there.
The entrance is tricky since the address for Chapin park is 3800 S. Hydraulic, but that entrance is still locked since it's not been paved yet. You have to go to the Macarthur entrance, right across the Emery Park entrance.
Do make sure your dogs have been socialized when letting them off the leash. Had one dog on saturday attacked two dogs and seemed to just pick anyone it felt like. Of course we want any and all dogs to run the 7 acres in the big dog area, but also don't want any of our dogs to be harmed. Small quarrels tend to happen and get shrugged off and no big deal. And they can and will happen when new dogs are experiencing the huge area and sometimes bombardment of current dogs there. Join us for chats or stand with us watching our four legged friends run and run and run!
My dog Toez insists we go to the park at least twice a week now. When the weather gets nicer I am sure it will be more often. The only question he has is........" duz n e 1 no wen they r turnin the watr on out ther? It sure gets aweful hot out there when your running with your homies and playin ball, it makz mi tung hang out." Come join in the fun!!!! ![]()
I'm going to guess water be on soon, but might be until next month when there is no signs of freezing temps through the night. Many of us bring jugs of water and bowls for the dogs. I suggest to do the same until the water is turned on.
I have not been to the dog park but have heard the following comment: Not all large breed dogs like small dogs and some owners turn their small dogs out in the large dog side with no consideration of this. Perhaps their small dog gets along with large dogs so it never occurs to them. I happen to own a medium size dog that really doesn't care for small dogs at all and will snap at them when they come close. Knowing this, I keep her away from small dogs and all is well. She has never bitten another dog, but the 1st time would be once too many. Please, if you have a small dog, do not send it out with the larger dogs without considering that there may be a large dog that is just ot a fanof the small dog.
My sister, whom I adored, died of breast cancer December 1, 2006. Dee was a huge animal lover and always sent money to shelters, rescues, etc. In her memory, I started making dog clothes called DD Designs and sell them. The Kansas Humane Society receives a minimum of half of the sale. The remainder goes back into purchasing fabric and supplies to keep it going. I keep nothing for my time, it is all reinvested. Please watch for these clothes at dog events around the state and before shopping for dog clothes at WalMart, which are made in China, check out DD Designs and know you are helping homeless pets. They are available at Andover Boarding Kennel and will be at Salty Dog, Race the Wind, and Woofstock.
I have seen the same situation with the small dogs going in the large dog area. And the rules are posted. You shouldn't have to prohibit your dogs freedom if he or she gets along just fine with 25lb plus dogs just fine. I suggest simply going up to the owner saying your dog doesn't get along too well with small dogs and for their dogs safety if they could please put their small dog in the small dog area. If you go on a weekend and see a group of people it's most likely big dogs huge paws meetup time for we host one every weekend and let us know and we will kindly ask the owner. And if the owner gets defensive or angry then leave them alone and report them. That's why there are rules posted. Not to break them and not to make people angry, but to provide the safest environment for the dogs.
