Jack Brand of Caring Hands Humane Society in Newton reports that all 20 shih tzus taken in by the shelter Tuesday after they were given up by a breeder were adopted within 24 hours.

“We are thrilled and deeply grateful to all the people who offered these dogs a second chance," Brand said. "This was just incredible!”

The dogs were part of a rescue operation by Kansas Animal Health Department.  It was the second large rescue that Caring Hands has helped with so far this year.

Brand wants people to know that many other dogs are still available for adoption at the shelter. These include pugs, cocker spaniels, a shih-tzu/Lhasa apso mix and a toy fox terrier.

These dogs were placed in foster care to make room for the shih tzus, Brand said, but will be returning to the shelter soon.

Adoption applications are being accepted now.
