"Beautiful dog" photo contest

The Eagle and Wichita Paws received more than 100 entries in our “beautiful dog” photo contest — and it was tough narrowing those entries down to 15 finalists.

How do you choose the most beautiful of six Shelties, or of several Labradors, golden retrievers, beagles, shepherds or any other breed -- or mixed breed?

Taking a lesson we learned from our “beautiful cat” contest a couple of months ago, we tried to ignore the photos of cute puppies and concentrate on photos that really said “beautiful dog.”

We also tried to pick the best-quality photos, ones that showed the dog in its best light.

Now it’s up to you to choose your favorite from these 15 finalists. Deadline for voting is 10 p.m. Monday.

The winning photo will be featured in The Eagle on April 24, and the photographer will receive a $50 gift card to the pet store of his or her choice.

Thanks to everyone who entered. All of your dogs are truly beautiful.

— Diane McCartney and Cori Dodds

Where are the fifteen finalists to vote on? I'm glad someone else has to narrow down the choices, but folks aren't going to have much time to view and vote! Thanks

Can someone monitor the IP addresses voters are coming in from? Moya just gave themselves 150+ votes in less than an hour. 169 at 10:30pm Sunday night... they didn't have 10 a few hours ago! This contest is a joke if someone could just delete their cookies and keep voting!!! Seriously?

Moya's owner is my daughter. She wasnt aware that she was a finalist until yesterday when we let all our online friends know to vote. It is sad that a contest that was fun turns to name calling.

Yes, please check IPs, cookies, etc. If the judges wish to see my facebook page ~ I posted during the day yesterday as Moya moved from 3percent to 6percent, all through yesterday (so it will be in my history) ~ to Moya being ahead this morning which was more than just a few hours.

No matter who wins, at least there have been a lot of people checking out Wichita Paws in the last couple days.

I spoke to Diane McCartney today and she said there is nothing they can do about it... it's not a "scientific contest". Sorry if my last post came off as name calling. I now realize anybody can vote a few hundred times and we'll never know who is doing it. Its sad because I know I have gotten people around the world on here and voting.

We have lots of people voting too from all over ~ maybe not the world, but in several states. I havent heard back from the ones that are out-of-country.
    Glad you talked to Diane.
Blair (my collie) won a contest on here when it was first starting up. I didnt know until you mentioned it that there was a way to post multiple times. On my Facebook page someone had asked about how many times they can vote because some contests allow more than one vote. I told them I didnt know, but thought it was just once. Moya's Facebook page was asked the same question from someone different & she told they could only vote once.
    Good Luck!

    Diane,
Please take a look at the postings under "Moya is in the Contest". I dont know who the poster is, but there is no mistake on them calling us "cheaters". I will be deleting the Blog when the contest is ended.
    Thanks

Diane and Cori - Thank you for holding another wonderful pet contest!

Please do not let the poor sportsmanship shown by the few that make unsubstantiated accusations and inflamatory remarks (yes, that is you GBock and doggieluvr13) discourage you from from future contests. I can attest to loving these contests you run.

    Keep up the good work.

I find it absolutely amazing that Gbock in one post accuses another person of cheating. Calls for checking IP addresses, accuses another of voting multiple times for themselves. Not only is that poor sportsmanship, it gives the impression that no other dog is worthy of being cute. All dog owners feel their dog is gorgeous and have blinders on regarding how gorgeous someone else's dog is. But these types of accusations do nothing but sully their own name and reputation. There is nothing wrong with asking friends for votes. This is done many times on all types of lists and forums. It is personally offensive to see a supposed adult tantruming in a public forum such as this. It is normal protocol for votes such as this to have a way to ensure that one person does not vote multiple times. Perhaps GBock this is something that was attempted by you and when it could not be done, turned it around onto another. A public apology should be issued and the offending post removed.

Hey guys, I talked to Diane yesterday, and I checked with the polldaddy.com folks and while they couldn't legally give me any specifics, they confirmed that there were multiple (100+) votes from the same IP address over a very short amount of time (less than an hour) for MULTIPLE contestants. Wether or not you know who was doing it or that it was even being done at all, it was. I proved that it could be done and talked to Diane about it. It doesn't take all that much knowledge to know how to do it. And in the last hour of the contest, I did it myself and yet somehow someone else was still getting votes faster than me. Weird. The contest wasn't about who had the "most beautiful" dog, or how many friends you have, or how many people you could get to vote. It became about who knows how to disable their browser cookies and how fast can you click the "vote" button. Pretty sad. This is the way it happened, fact, period, dot.

Colliesrno1, as you'll see a few posts above, I did apologize for coming off as a name caller. I do not know who the other poster was, nor do I care. I am leaving on a military deployment in a few hours and I guarantee wichitapaws.com will be the last thing on my mind for quite a while. I hope that the Wichita Eagle folks figure out a more suitable way to run contests in the future. Thanks for the opportunity to take part, it was a great idea.
