Good news for animals! Spay-Neuter Kansas, the clinic at 319 S. Hydraulic that offers low-cost spay and neuter surgery for dogs and cats, is now open three days a week. Surgeries can be scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays, as well as the second Saturday of every month.
People who can provide proof of low income ($40,000 a year or less) can have their cats altered for $30 or their dogs for $40.
Since the clinic opened in July, 731 cats and dogs have been spayed or neutered. About 400 of those were females, and board member Ellen Querner figures that since the average litter is six, that means at least 2,400 unwanted puppies and kittens that will not be born in the coming year.
Veterinarian Bill Skaer, another board member, helped open the clinic in response to the astonishing number of dogs and cats that are euthanized in Wichita each year.
The clinic still needs donations to pay for the surgeries and for a Spay Angel fund that pays for surgeries for pets whose owners cannot afford them.
