Border Collies Gone Wild

Hi. I've had a border collie since July or so, when he showed up dirty and hungry at my door. He's the sweetest thing and absolutely adores me, which is why I didn't think twice about spending the money when it turned out he had heartworms.

But my little Bundle of Love is becoming more and more destructive. He loves to unmake the bed, and I keep finding little holes chewed in my comforter. Now. . . my chocolate lab Lucy has done the same thing before, so I don't really know who chewed the latest hole (in a quilt I just bought three weeks ago to replace the other one destroyed by busy little teeth). I'm still waiting for the results of DNA testing from the slobber to determine who the culprit was. But my suspicion is Scout since he is always messing with the bedding. (He likes to shove all the pillows off and use his paws to move the comforter and top sheet to the bottom of the bed. Why I even bother making the bed is beyond me, but it's a habit.)

I know border collies need a "job" to do and lots of exercise. We walk Scout. He and Lucy, the lab, wrestle all the time. Scout runs around the back yard. I try to play fetch with him (though he doesn't quite seem to understand the concept).

Anyone have any suggestions on what I can do before he starts to, I don't know, eat the sofa or the plaster walls?

Also, he is stubborn as can be. The only thing that seems to work to get him to stop doing something he's not supposed to is to point a newspaper at him. Lucy, on the other hand, typically minds.

Any suggestions/advice/therapy much appreciated.

I would suggest some toys that make him think and work. Puzzle cubes, kong toys filled with goodies, ect. I would suggest getting him to doggy day care or running at a dog park in addition to the walking. Also training him in a sport such as agility or fly ball to use his brain. Maybe you can find a group that he can learn to herd with. Glad he is doing well with his heartworm treatment.

Fly ball is a game where the dogs are in teams of 4 and they race over 4 jumps to hit a ramp which releases a ball, the dogs than sprint back. Each dog runs one at a time, it is a high energy relay race for dogs. The Wichita Dog Training Club has an affiliated fly ball team.
