Marbles...not in training mode, but loving relaxed happy mode with his 'makin' biscuits' paws...

I am feeling a little different today (nope, has nothing to do with the pregnancy) and hope I can encourage your involvement!

I have recently begun teaching my cats some obedience commands.  I figure my dogs are trained and the cats hang out with the dogs in the kitchen when I’m cooking (no, I don’t feed/drop scraps)…and this is the time I work with reminder/refresher training.  It’s easiest for me because in between stirring, mixing and waiting on things to boil, etc, I have down time.  TV doesn’t impress me, so I have chosen this time to work with the fur babies.  That aside, my dogs, albeit are not perfect, have the routines down!

My cats all hang out with us as we do these trainings…so I thought, ‘HEY, why not teach the cats some tricks!’  They love their cookies and know the word ‘COOKIE ‘quite well!  My first trick was to teach them the word ‘cookie’ so that they knew what it was they were going to get.  That did NOT take long to learn!

I have started with my most eager cat, Marbles.  He is learning ‘sit’ for a cookie.  He thought he needed to climb my leg whenever I said ‘cookie’.  OUCH!!  Especially when I have on shorts!!  It seemed natural (not to mention quite necessary for healthy blood flow) to teach a different and more positive reaction to that fun ‘cookie’ word.  It’s going well so far and I am very pleased with him!  This is kind of new to me, so I will keep you posted.

My question to you, is how many of you out there teach your cats any tricks?  And for you that work with your dogs, what tricks or commands do they know?  Training is so much fun and it’s a GREAT way to bond with your pets!  If you haven’t started already, I encourage you to give it a whirl! J
